Matt Nohn on Regaining Control of Rapid Urbanization

In the decades since Henri Lefebvre wrote about the “Right to the city” in the 1960s, the concept has adapted as conditions have changed. Matt Nohn (LF ’14) has watched this unfold in his 15 years of assignments around the world for GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), the World Bank, UN-Habitat, the Gates Foundation, and as director of Rapid Urbanism. In a recent essay in Urbanet, Nohn untangles some of today’s complex forces of urban expansion and suggests strategies that can elevate urban poor communities. Read “The Right to the City: ‘It is critical to urbanise informal settlements.’”
