Cathleen McGuiganCathleen McGuigan (LF 1993), editor-in-chief of Architectural Record, reports that the economic growth of African countries presents opportunities for Western architects to undertake significant projects for governments, private developers and institutions.

The best of the new projects showcase contemporary design inspired by local conditions and traditional construction methods. McGuigan contemplates the tension between some countries’ compromised human rights and the constructive role architects can play in promoting sensible and sensitive development.
