Ana Gelabert-Sanchez (LF ‘11) has joined forces with her old boss, former Miami mayor Manny Diaz, to oppose a proposal by David Beckham to plunk a soccer stadium in Museum Park. They coordinated a statement signed by designers and civic leaders, urging the city to reject Beckham’s attempt to upend the park project–and its goal of preserving open waterfront space–just as the park is poised for opening to the public.
Museum Park has been 14 years in the making, incorporating a deep water boat slip and 2 museums along with public access to the shoreline along Biscayne Bay. Gelabert-Sanchez oversaw the Museum Park master plan and Mayor Diaz viewed it as a centerpiece of his administration. The question is whether money and special interests will talk louder than public benefit now.
