2015 Community Service Fellowships Announced

Doebele Fellows - supported by a gift from the Loeb Alumni in honor of Bill Doebele - will be helping to advance the work of Theaster Gates’s (LF ’11) Rebuild Foundation in Chicago and of Liveable Streets in Cambridge this summer. They’re among winners of the 2015 Harvard Graduate School of Design Community Service Fellowships, which enable students to apply their knowledge and gain experience in paid summer internships in nonprofit and government settings.

LOEBlogger Sarah Bolivar (MLA ’16) will be bringing her experience and idealism to bear on Greenway Links, a project co-founded by Matthew Kiefer (LF '96 and visiting lecturer on land use development) with Steve Miller of Livable Streets. Bolivar  says, “I'm thrilled to work with the Livable Streets Alliance on their Greenway Links initiative, a proposed 200-mile network of pedestrian and biking paths that stretch from the Mystic River to the Neponset River. The project is a great opportunity to refine my understanding of how to design at a regional scale that is rich in scope, yet fine-grained enough to have a clear spatial impact on the ground. My hope is that we as a society can begin to consider these transportation networks not only as recreational but as necessary infrastructure for the health and well-being of people.”

Cara Michell (MUP ’16) will embed with the Rebuild Foundation. In addition, this year for the first time the Joint Center for Housing Studies is co-sponsoring 7 internships related to real estate, housing, community development. The full list of Fellows is below.
